The West (Valley of the Kings), Dandara Temple and Karnak Temple
A trusted partner experience, hand-picked and featured on This is Egypt.

Overview
This experience takes you through Luxor, a city long associated with light and royalty. You will explore the place once known as Thebes and learn that ancient writers called it the “city of the sun”, the “city of light” and the “city of the scepter”. The Greek poet Homer described it as the “City of the Hundred Babs” in the Iliad. After the Arab conquest of Egypt the city came to be known as Luxor — a name that is the plural of the word palace, reflecting the many pharaohs’ palaces the city contained. You will also visit the Valley of the Kings, sometimes named the “Valley of the Biban Kings”. Along the way you will learn that this valley was used over a period of about 500 years, between the 16th and 11th centuries BC, to construct tombs for pharaohs and nobles of the modern state. The account explains the valley’s long role as a burial landscape and places it in the broader history of Luxor and ancient Egypt.
