Overview

You will explore three of Egypt’s most ancient sites: Saqqara, the Dahshur pyramids and the site of Memphis (Men-nefer). At Saqqara you will encounter the Pyramid of Djoser, the oldest complete stone building complex known in history, built during the Third Dynasty. Sixteen Egyptian kings also built pyramids at Saqqara; these remain in various states of preservation. The site stayed important for non-royal burials and for cult ceremonies for more than 3,000 years, continuing into Ptolemaic and Roman times. At Dahshur you will see pyramids that played a crucial role in the Egyptians’ architectural learning. The experience will show how knowledge gained there helped the transition from step-sided to smooth-sided pyramids. The Bent Pyramid (2613–2589 BC) was built under King Sneferu, who later ordered the construction of the Red Pyramid as a second monument at Dahshur. Finally, you will visit Memphis, or Men-nefer, the ancient capital of Inebu-hedj, the first nome of Lower Egypt (known as mḥw, “north”). Memphis is now an open museum and contains the statue of Ramses the second and the Sphinx of Memphis. Along the way you will gain a clear sense of how these places fit together in Egypt’s long funerary and architectural history.
