Overview

You will visit Egypt’s most iconic ancient sites, starting with the Great Pyramids of Giza and the nearby Sphinx. At the Giza plateau you’ll take in the scale and shape of the pyramids and see the Sphinx’s carved profile as you move around these monumental remains. Along the way you’ll learn about their significance in ancient Egyptian burial practices and the engineering that made them lasting landmarks. The experience also includes the older Step Pyramid at Sakkara, where you’ll see one of the earliest large-scale stone structures and the surrounding necropolis that shows the development of pyramid design. You will then visit Memphis, known as the first ancient capital of Egypt, and encounter the ruins and remnants that reflect the beginnings of Egyptian civilisation. Taken together, these visits bring you close to the foundations of ancient Egypt. You’ll explore a range of funerary architecture and archaeological remains, and gain a clearer sense of how these places relate to one another near Cairo.
