Overview
You will travel north of Luxor to visit two magnificent temples: Abydos and Dendera. Both are linked to the great ancient Egyptian gods and offer a direct encounter with Egypt’s religious past. The visit focuses on these two notable sites and the figures to whom they were dedicated. Abydos is dedicated to the ancient Egyptian god of the underworld; you will see the temple complex and its associations with that deity as you move through the site. Dendera is dedicated to the goddess Hathor and is one of the best preserved and most colourful temples you can visit. Much of the original paint remains, and the full colours are still visible on most of the walls, giving a rare sense of how these spaces once looked. Along the way you will gain a clear sense of the temples’ religious purpose and their visual impact in antiquity.
