Overview

You will begin on Luxor’s west bank with a visit to the Valley of the Kings, the ancient burial ground used for pharaohs. As you explore, you’ll see the grandeur of the funerary architecture and learn about the many rulers laid to rest there, including the tombs of Tutmosis I, Tutmosis III, Tut-Ankh-Amon, Ramssess VI, Mrenptah and Amonhotep II. Nearby, you’ll visit the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, built by Hatshepsut—daughter of Thutmosis I—who ruled for about 20 years during the 18th Dynasty (approximately 1490–1469 B.C.) and is known as the only pharaonic woman to have reigned in ancient Egypt. You’ll also pass the Colossi of Memnon, the surviving stone giants that marked the mortuary temple of Amenhotep III. After crossing to Luxor’s east bank, you’ll have lunch at a local restaurant before continuing to the Karnak Temples. There you’ll see one of the largest examples of ancient Egyptian worship, a complex dedicated to the god Amon, his wife Mut and their son Khonsu. The tour concludes with a return to your hotel in Luxor.
