Overview
This experience takes you to Wadi Al-Hitan, a remarkable natural reserve that preserves a record of life from around 40 million years ago. Situated within the Fayoum Oasis and part of the Wadi El-Rayan Protectorate, the site exposes how once-deep seas gave way to desert. As you move through the windswept landscape, you will see extensive deposits of petrified animals and plants and learn how these fossil beds document a prehistoric world. The area is also a seasonal stop for migratory birds and supports various endangered animals and wild plants. Wadi Al-Hitan lies to the south‑west of Cairo, roughly 220 km away; the route takes you via Fayoum and then west toward Wadi El Rayan. The scientific story of the site began in 1902, when an English scientist visiting the Fayoum area for graduation research recorded fossil bones in Wadi Al-Hitan. Along the way, you will explore the geological transition from ocean depths to desert terrain and hear about the discoveries that reveal this long history under the sand waves.
