A guide from Tamer Safari Tours will meet you at your hotel and lead you through the heart of historic Cairo, beginning on El Moez Le Din Allah Street — one of Egypt’s oldest streets and a clear witness to the city’s past. As you move along the street you will see monuments such as Bab El Fetouh and Bab El Nasr, then head toward the northern side of the city to El Darb El Asfar, the ancient quarter of Islamic Cairo. There you will visit Barqouq Mosque and its school in Nahassen, the El Aqmar Mosque, the Mosque of El Saleh Tala, the Blue Mosque, and the dome, hospital and school of Qalawoon, among others. One of the best views is from the Cairo Tower on Gezira Island (Zemalek), just north of the Museum of Modern Art, where you will enjoy a panoramic vision of the city. The tower is 187 metres tall and has a latticework tube that fans out at the top; it is said to imitate a lotus plant and ranks only fourth among the world’s highest towers. Along the way you will explore the architecture and history that make these areas central to Cairo’s cultural heritage.
