Overview

You will explore both the West Bank and the East Bank of Luxor, the capital of the New Kingdom, visiting the Valley of the Kings, the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, the Colossi of Memnon, Karnak Temple and Luxor Temple. The experience includes a short Egyptology course to help you read the art and architecture and to introduce the beliefs that shaped these monuments. As you move through the sites, you will navigate largely on your own and be encouraged to reflect on what you see. The course will prompt you to ask how and why ancient Egyptians expressed their ideas of life and death through sculpture, relief and layout. Along the way you will encounter layers of meaning in the temples and tombs and be guided to see how art speaks as a form of philosophy. This visit is designed to combine site visits with thoughtful interpretation, so you will leave with a clearer sense of the artistic messages and life philosophy embedded in Luxor’s greatest monuments.
