Overview
The Valley of the Kings is the ancient cemetery where pharaohs and their families were buried in tombs carved into the rock. As you explore the site, you will walk through corridors decorated with paintings and enter chambers that once held the mummies of Egypt’s rulers. The tombs reflect the ancient Egyptians’ extraordinary focus on life after death and are often true works of art. Many of the tombs had already been looted before archaeologists arrived, which makes the 1922 discovery by Howard Carter of Tutankhamun’s tomb especially notable. Unlike most others, Tutankhamun’s tomb was found filled with treasures — gold beds, a throne, chests and the famous golden mask weighing about 10 kilograms. The mask itself is now housed in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo and can be seen there during a trip to Cairo. Along the way at the Valley of the Kings, you will get a close sense of the burial practices, artistry and history that shaped these remarkable ancient sites.
